First of all, how do you know it’s a power problem?
If you’ve just arrived home to find that your garage door won’t open remotely, it’s important to check that there aren’t other issues that are preventing your door from opening. Here’s a few quick checks you can do to figure out the problem;
- If you can access your garage via a door, check that the garage light still works and then see if you can operate your door from your wall remote.
- If your lights aren’t working - the good news is, it’s probably a power issue, and not a garage door issue. We recommend checking your meter box for any tripped fuses, before checking if there’s any power outages in our area.

It's definitely a power outage, what's next?
If you’ve figured out that you’re only dealing with a power outage, getting your door set to manual mode is surprisingly easy.
First of all, your door must be in the down position. Next, most electric garage doors have a red emergency cord (you’ll find this dangling above you). Find this and pull downwards to set the door to manual mode. From here, you should be able to open your garage door using the handle which is usually located at one of the sides of your door.
Once the power’s been restored, setting your garage back up to auto mode is just as simple. Ensure your door is closed, and use the same red emergency cord to pull up and put your door rail back into its original position.
Helpful tips:
- If something doesn’t feel right, don’t force it! If there’s a jam, a dent, or a broken spring forcing your door out of place could be very costly on your pockets later on. When in doubt, call a specialist.
- When manually closing your door, be careful to gently lower it back into position. Letting your door free-fall and drop to the ground can damage your door and your garage’s floor.
